OEACP: The King of Eswatini visits H.E. Obiang Nguema Mbasogo – a meeting between two presidents unlike anyati III and his wife. A meeting of royalty. Or almost.

The presidential villa in Sipopo provided the setting for this meeting. His Excellency Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, host of the summit, took advantage of the Swazi monarch’s presence for a one-on-one discussion.

No protocol, no grand statements. Two leaders talking to one another, assessing their relations, looking to the future.

The monarch of Eswatini had arrived in Malabo at the head of a large delegation. He attended the entire summit, took part in the discussions and addressed the assembly.

Before departing, he made a point of greeting his Equatorial Guinean counterpart. It was an opportunity to strengthen ties that go back a long way.

The two countries have no disputes. They share common visions on development, South-South cooperation, and the role of small nations in major international forums.

President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, as chair of the OEACP, has a powerful voice. Mswati, as Africa’s last absolute monarch, has a unique status. Their meeting in Malabo was a natural development.

The summit is over. The 79 members of the OEACP have returned home. But relations between states are also forged in these corridors, these villas, these private conversations.
