Football: Prestianni racism accusation sparks homophobic tirade from Chilavert
Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni faces a potential 10-match ban after being accused of directing a racist slur at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior during Tuesday’s Champions League playoff first leg. The Argentine allegedly called the Brazilian forward a “monkey,” prompting UEFA to open an investigation. However, the controversy escalated Wednesday when legendary Paraguayan goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert came to Prestianni’s defense; only to unleash discriminatory remarks of his own.
Speaking to Argentine media outlet Olé, Chilavert first argued that Vinicius provokes opponents, claiming the Real Madrid star insulted Prestianni during the match.
But the former shot-stopper quickly pivoted to targeting French striker Kylian Mbappé with transphobic comments.

“He talks about values and lives with a transgender person; that’s not normal,” Chilavert said. “Everyone does what they want, but it’s not normal for a man to live with a transgender person; that’s the role of a woman.”
Chilavert then broadened his attack, suggesting football has become “effeminate” due to cameras and microphones.
“Why sanction Prestianni? It would make it seem like the LGBTQ+ community is a role model, which is false,” he added. “Football is a playground for men.”
UEFA has yet to announce a decision on Prestianni’s case, which could result in a multi-match suspension if the racism allegations are confirmed.
