Burkina Faso: Authorities reorganize army after extradition of Paul-Henri Damiba

The Burkinabe authorities have undertaken a major reorganization within the military apparatus, following the extradition of former junta leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. In exile in Togo since September 2022, Damiba was arrested on January 16 and handed over to Burkinabe authorities following a judicial decision rendered in Lomé.

The former leader faces multiple serious charges, including alleged offenses relating to breach of public interests and incitement to commit crimes.

This legal proceeding follow the dismantling of an alleged coup plot which authorities attribute to networks linked to the former head of state.

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, the government is asserting its determination to secure the military chain of command.

This strategy aims to thwart any destabilization attempts and to cleanse the armed forces of influences deemed detrimental to national cohesion.

The ongoing reorganization measures involve several postings and reassignments within the defense forces.
