Mali: Bamako denies rumours of imminent launch of single currency for West African Economic and Monetary Union
In response to the spread of unverified information, Malian authorities have acted swiftly to clarify the situation regarding the possible single currency of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES). At the beginning of the week, the Ministry of Economy and Finance issued a formal denial concerning any announcement of the imminent circulation of a common currency.
In an official statement, the Malian government clarified that no institutional communication has announced the finalization of an operational timeline or the imminent launch of such a currency.
This clarification aims to put an end to speculation circulated in certain media and on digital platforms.
The authorities are calling on the media and the general public to exercise the greatest caution and to rely exclusively on information disseminated through official channels.
This rapid response demonstrates the commitment of the government to transparency and the reliability of economic information.
The question of a common currency within the AES is among the long-term projects discussed by the three member states.
However, as this denial reminds us, monetary convergence processes require thorough technical preparations and coordinated official decisions before any implementation.
This institutional reminder underscores the importance of rigorous economic reporting, particularly on sensitive topics such as currency.
