Liverpool edges closer to Knockouts with commanding win in Marseille

Liverpool secured a crucial 3-0 away victory against Olympique de Marseille on Wednesday, strengthening their position for automatic qualification to the Champions League knockout stage. Dominik Szoboszlai’s clever free-kick just before halftime broke the deadlock, followed by a Geronimo Rulli own goal and a late Cody Gakpo strike.

Manager Arne Slot praised his squad’s performance and notably paid tribute to his Marseille counterpart, Roberto De Zerbi. “We respect his work immensely,” Slot stated, before turning focus to his own team’s resilience.

The match marked  the first start of Mohamed Salah since November, following a public dispute over his recent absence during the Africa Cup of Nations.

While the Egyptian forward was active, he remains without a club goal in seven matches.

Marseille, now 19th in the expanded league format, struggled to convert chances, with Hugo Ekitike hitting the crossbar.

Liverpool, now unbeaten in 13 matches, rose to fourth in the table. A win against Qarabag at Anfield next week will guarantee a top-eight finish and bypass the playoff round.
