AFCON 2025/ Cameroon’s resilience seals quarter-final berth in tense clash

In a dramatic Round of 16 encounter in Rabat, Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions advanced to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over a dominant South Africa, proving that efficiency can triumph over possession.

For the first half-hour, South Africa controlled proceedings. Their high press and verticality created clear chances, but wayward finishing and crucial saves from goalkeeper Epassy kept Cameroon level.

The match turned on a moment of clinical precision against the run of play. In the 34th minute, Junior Tchamadeu struck, his composed finish instantly shifting the momentum.

Cameroon doubled their lead shortly after halftime through Christian Kofane, capitalizing on their growing confidence.

South Africa pressed relentlessly and were rewarded with a late goal from Evidence Makgopa in the 87th minute, setting up a nervy finale.

However, a resolute Cameroonian defense, having bent under sustained pressure for much of the match, held firm to secure a hard-fought qualification.

The result highlights a classic tournament narrative: Cameroon’s composure and lethal finishing ultimately overcame South Africa’s energetic but imperfect dominance.
