Cameroon makes historic debut at World Gymnastics championships

In a landmark moment for Cameroonian sports, the nation will participate in the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships for the first time ever. The 53rd edition, held in Jakarta from October 19-25, 2025, will see a four-member team Ruben Sodea, Ledoux Ngorbo, Moira Teneku, and Lisa Mebar—compete against the world’s elite.

This debut is a significant milestone, reflecting the Cameroon Gymnastics Federation’s dedicated efforts to develop the sport locally.

The team aims to gain invaluable experience and establish Cameroon as an emerging force in international gymnastics.

Their participation is part of a growing African presence, with nations like Algeria, Egypt, and South Africa also fielding athletes.

The competition will be intense, featuring global stars such as France’s Olympic champion Kaylia Nemour and Japan’s top male gymnasts.

While medals are the immediate target for established powers, for Cameroon’s pioneers, the primary goal is to learn, build visibility, and inspire a new generation of athletes back home.

This appearance marks a crucial first step toward future Olympic qualification and solidifying the nation’s place on the global gymnastics stage.
