Togo/ Civil service: Announcement of a renewal of the sector with 650 civil servants retiring

Lomé, Togo – In a significant move to modernize its state administration, the Togolese government has announced that over 650 civil servants will retire on January 1, 2026. The decision, formalized by an October 7, 2025 decree signed by the Minister of Public Service, Gilbert Bawara, marks a pivotal step in the ongoing reform of the country’s public sector.

This is far from a routine administrative update. The large-scale retirement wave reflects the government’s firm commitment to creating a more dynamic and efficient administration.

It impacts several strategic sectors, including Economy and Finance, Justice, Water and Sanitation, and Labor and Social Dialogue.

Even prestigious institutions like the Supreme Court, the National Assembly, and the Presidency of the Council will see seasoned officials depart.

According to the official text, the affected civil servants have reached the mandatory retirement age and are thus authorized to retire in accordance with existing regulations.

This measure paves the way for a new phase of rejuvenation within the public service, a key priority for the modernization of Togo’s administration.

Behind this decision lies the ambition to build a civil service better equipped to meet development challenges, more attuned to realities on the ground, and more focused on effectiveness. While a chapter is closing, the primary goal is to write a new future for Togolese governance.
