Diplomacy: South African Ambassador found dead in Paris hotel tragedy

Nathi Mthethwa, South Africa’s ambassador to France, has been discovered dead near a luxury Paris hotel, French authorities.
The 58-year-old diplomat was reported missing Monday evening by his wife following a concerning message. Investigators revealed he had reserved a room on the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, where a security window was found forced open.
Paris prosecutors have launched an investigation, with a magistrate dispatched to the scene. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
A veteran of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress, Mthethwa held prominent government positions including police minister and arts and culture minister. He assumed his ambassadorial post in December 2023.
His political career was marked by close ties to former President Jacob Zuma, and he was named in the state capture inquiry examining corruption allegations during Zuma’s tenure.
Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola paid tribute to Mthethwa as “a distinguished servant of the nation,” noting his loss would resonate throughout the international diplomatic community.
French authorities continue their investigation into the incident at the four-star establishment, as South Africa awaits answers about the tragic death of one of its senior diplomatic representatives.
