Burkina Faso: Partnership Faso – UN, focus on sovereignty and inclusive development

On Saturday, September 27, 2025, in New York, the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, served to reaffirm Burkina Faso’s position on current global issues and strengthen cooperation with the UN.
The Head of Government expressed gratitude for the arrangements facilitating his country’s participation in the international gathering and acknowledged the UN’s consistent humanitarian support.
He outlined his government’s actions to reclaim national territory and improve living conditions, highlighting the positive impact of presidential initiatives.
Addressing the creation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), he emphasized that this joint initiative by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger is based on pooling efforts to defeat terrorism and build collective development.
He denounced the covert support enjoyed by armed groups, stating that sophisticated equipment is regularly found in hideouts destroyed by AES forces.
The Prime Minister also criticized hostile communication campaigns attributed to France and its relays, asserting they aim to discredit the AES.
He reiterated that the three states’ decision to break with agreements deemed unbalanced was a sovereign and salutary choice.
“Burkina Faso’s salvation lies in its patriotic resurgence,” he stated, noting the country remains engaged on two fronts: the fight against terrorism and the struggle for development.
In a spirit of frankness, he urged the UN to clearly denounce the financing of terrorism and undertake profound reform to remain a credible and useful institution.
António Guterres, for his part, expressed his emotion regarding the population’s suffering and renewed the UN’s commitment to supporting Burkina Faso. The meeting strengthened dialogue between the two parties and consolidated a partnership based on trust and shared development.
