AES: A united voice at the UN to defend the sovereignty and aspirations of the peoples of the Sahel

The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) held an important working session on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, in New York, on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly. The purpose of this meeting was to harmonize positions ahead of the collective participation of member countries in the general debate scheduled for Saturday, September 27.
In an international context marked by profound change, the AES emphasized the importance of speaking with one voice on the global stage. This consultation allowed delegations to share information about the internal situation of their respective countries, as well as exchange analyses on the state of the world, current challenges, and the common aspirations of the region’s peoples.
One of the main points of reflection focused on the Confederation’s determination to assert its independence and sovereignty. The AES seeks to move away from inherited practices that no longer serve the interests of its populations, and instead promote a new approach centered on dignity, autonomy, and prosperity. In this regard, the meeting confirmed the members’ commitment to act in a coordinated manner, highlighting a collective strategy at major international gatherings.
Beyond the UN general debate, the Confederation also scheduled joint activities, including meetings with Sahel communities living in the United States. This initiative aims to strengthen the bond between the diaspora and the transformation process undertaken by the AES, while mobilizing all available resources to support common projects.
The discussions also provided an opportunity to assess the progress made since the creation of the Confederation. The AES welcomed the advances achieved thanks to strengthened cooperation among its members and reaffirmed its determination to continue along this path. Unity, solidarity, and coordinated action emerged as essential pillars for achieving the set objectives.
The Confederation of Sahel States reiterated its resolve to continue working in solidarity, coordinating its initiatives, and maintaining momentum until its ultimate goal is reached: ensuring the sovereignty, dignity, and prosperity of the peoples of the Sahel. The UN platform will thus serve as an opportunity for the AES to project a strong and united voice, carrying hope and change for the future of the region.
