Mourinho after Fenerbahçe exit could be back in Portugal with a new club

José Mourinho appears set for a dramatic homecoming at Benfica Lisbon, just weeks after his dismissal from Turkish side Fenerbahçe. Portuguese daily A Bola reports that advanced negotiations are underway between the Special One and his former club.

The 62-year-old tactician could make his debut as early as Saturday against Vila das Aves, marking a remarkable 25-year return to where his managerial career began.

This swift appointment follows Bruno Lage’s resignation after Benfica’s disappointing European defeat to Qarabag.

Club president Rui Costa has reportedly identified Mourinho as his priority target, eager to finalize the deal within days.

The timing couldn’t be more symbolic – Mourinho launching his senior coaching journey at Estádio da Luz in 1999, now potentially returning to revive both his career and the club’s fortunes.

Sources suggest Mourinho is enthusiastic about the prospect, having previously hinted at his desire to return to Portuguese football.

The former Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Roma boss sees this as an urgent rescue mission for a team desperately seeking stability.

If confirmed, Mourinho faces the compelling challenge of restoring Benfica’s domestic and European prominence, completing a full-circle moment that could define the final chapter of his illustrious career.
