Togo inaugurates modern mother-child healthcare wing to boost maternal and infant health

Togo has taken a significant step forward in strengthening its healthcare system with the official inauguration of the Mother-Child Wing at the Ordre de Malte Hospital in Elavagnon, located in the Plateaux region. The ceremony was presided over by Health Minister Professor Tchin Darré, representing the Head of Government, and attended by local and national authorities as well as international partners.
Equipped with modern facilities, the new wing enhances maternity, pediatric, and neonatal care services, with a primary focus on reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.
It addresses a growing demand: in 2024, the hospital recorded nearly 2,000 deliveries, including over 500 cesarean sections. Since January 2025, 402 cesareans have already been performed.
The new unit will improve medical support while ensuring a safe environment for mothers and their children.
For the Health Minister, this achievement aligns with the national roadmap prioritizing maternal and child health.
It complements the government’s ongoing efforts to modernize hospital infrastructure and enhance the quality of local healthcare services.
Beyond its regional impact, the inauguration highlights the need to expand such investments nationwide.
Togolese authorities view this project as a replicable model within the broader strategy to consolidate the health system and ensure equitable and universal access to essential healthcare for all citizens.
