Energy/ Niger on the path to energy sovereignty

Under the leadership of His Excellency General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of the Republic and Head of State, Niger is resolutely advancing toward energy sovereignty. This national ambition is being realized through bold reforms and transformative projects that are reshaping the country’s energy landscape.

Among the key measures is the strategic nationalization of NIGELEC, a strong symbol of the state’s renewed control over essential economic resources and levers.

This decision, widely supported by the people, marks a historic turning point in Niger’s determination to take charge of its energy sector and put an end to external dependencies.

In parallel, new solar and thermal power plants are being developed, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to diversifying energy sources.

These infrastructures enhance the country’s capacity to meet growing electricity demands while leveraging local resources and ensuring a sustainable energy transition.

Tangible results are already emerging, with a gradual increase in electrification rates, improved distribution, and a significant reduction in reliance on imports.

These advances represent a decisive step toward universal energy access a prerequisite for Niger’s economic and social development.

As emphasized by President Abdourahamane Tiani in his book, My Vision for a Truly Independent and Prosperous Niger, strategies for electricity access will be updated to better stimulate supply and distribution across the entire national territory.

This clear and determined vision positions energy not only as a right for every citizen but also as a driver of sovereignty and prosperity.
