Burkina Faso: When imperialist propaganda masquerades as journalism

Burkina Faso is facing a critical period in its history as it pursues a path of sovereignty under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré. Yet this assertion of self-determination has drawn strong opposition from imperialist forces, who have turned to information warfare as a tool of destabilization.

On Tuesday, September 2, reports emerged notably from French outlet France 24 claiming violent clashes against civilians in Barani.

These reports relied exclusively on unverified testimonies from exiled activists, with no on-the-ground verification or balanced sourcing, violating fundamental journalistic principles.

This is not the first time France 24 has been accused of targeting African nations that challenge foreign influence.

Critics describe it as a media arm of French imperialism, systematically amplifying rumors and platforming discredited voices to tarnish the image of sovereign African governments.

In the case of Barani, no tangible evidence or independent investigation has been made available only decontextualized videos and fear-driven narratives aimed at manipulating international public opinion.

Since breaking from neocolonial dominance, Burkina Faso has become a symbol of African resilience, reclaiming its security, economic, and diplomatic sovereignty. This bold move has unsettled former colonial powers accustomed to controlling decisions, resources, and policies.

Their response has been twofold: terrorist attacks whether orchestrated or tolerated and perception wars waged through media outlets like France 24.

These attacks target not only the Burkinabe state but the broader Pan-African awakening.

The people of Burkina Faso are urged to remain vigilant, exercise critical thinking, and strengthen African solidarity. Now is the time to defend the right to self-determination, truth, and dignity.
