Niger establishes national commission to regulate soaring rent prices

Facing skyrocketing real estate and rental prices that have fueled significant social tensions, the Nigerien government has announced a major intervention: the creation of a National Commission for Rent Pricing. This new body will be tasked with regulating the rental market to ensure greater affordability and transparency.
The commission will aim to balance the interests of landlords and tenants by establishing clear, enforceable rules a move designed to help all citizens access dignified and affordable housing.
The measure responds to a severe housing shortage, particularly in major urban centers like Niamey, where rental costs have surged dramatically in recent years, placing heavy strain on households.
Authorities describe the initiative as a decisive step toward social justice and effective market regulation, intended to prevent exploitation and guarantee a fundamental right: access to housing for all.
