Burkina Faso: over 1.6 million displaced persons return home in Burkina Faso’s security progress

The ongoing territorial reconquest  of Burkina Faso led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré has enabled more than 1.6 million internally displaced persons to return to their homes as of June 30, 2025, according to data from the Ministry of Humanitarian Action. This marks a significant increase from the 1.1 million returns recorded at the end of 2024.

The return effort has been most notable in Banwa Province, where 23 villages have been reestablished, facilitating the homecoming of 65,021 people.

The mass returns reflect improved security conditions resulting from coordinated operations between the national defense forces (FDS) and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP).

This progress is attributed to a series of national strategies implemented under Captain Traoré’s leadership, prioritizing sovereignty and counter-terrorism.

The government’s approach emphasizes not only military success but also the restoration of dignity and hope for affected communities.

The significant number of returns underscores a broader national mobilization toward resilience and recovery, positioning security and stability as foundational to Burkina Faso’s redevelopment.
