Morocco launches pioneering floating solar plant in Tangier

Morocco has inaugurated its first floating solar power plant, a landmark project marking a significant step in the kingdom’s renewable energy transition. The installation, located on the Oued Rmel reservoir, spans nearly 10 hectares.

The 13-megawatt facility consists of 22,624 photovoltaic panels mounted on 404 floating platforms.

It will supply clean electricity to the strategic Tanger Med port, enhancing the country’s energy security and reducing its carbon footprint.

Beyond power generation, the project addresses critical water scarcity. By covering part of the reservoir, the solar panels significantly reduce water evaporation, preserving vital freshwater supplies amid chronic drought conditions.

This dual-energy and water-saving approach aligns with Morocco’s national strategy to source over 52% of its energy from renewables by 2030.

The project also demonstrates an intelligent use of space by utilizing existing water bodies without consuming valuable agricultural or urban land.

The Tangier plant positions Morocco as a leading African innovator in green technology and establishes a replicable model for sustainable, sovereign energy development across the region.
