Education/ Togo reaffirms full free education policy ahead of new school year

On the eve of the new academic year, the Togolese government, under the leadership of His Excellency Faure Gnassingbé, has reaffirmed its commitment to completely free public education from kindergarten through high school. This strong announcement underscores the absolute priority given to education as a pillar of the nation’s human and social development.

The policy ensures that the state fully covers tuition fees in all public middle and high schools, relieving families of a often significant financial burden and marking a major social advancement.

It reflects the government’s conviction that investing in youth and their future is the most strategic commitment.

For transparency, the government clarified that the only contributions requested from parents are minimal, standardized “parallel fees”; set at a symbolic 3,000 FCFA for junior high school students and 5,000 FCFA for senior high school students.

These fees are strictly regulated and distinct from tuition, covering specific common services for all students to ensure equity across the country while upholding the core principle of free education.
