DRC/ The FARDC denounce new attacks by M23 rebels and AFC in the east of the country

On Tuesday, August 19, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) issued an official statement condemning a series of attacks carried out by rebels from the March 23 Movement (M23) and the Congo River Alliance (AFC) against their military positions in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu.
According to the statement, these offensives constitute a flagrant violation of the Washington agreements and the Doha Declaration of Principles, two diplomatic instruments recently concluded with the aim of establishing lasting peace in eastern DRC.
The Congolese army accuses these armed groups of openly defying regional and international commitments.
To illustrate the gravity of the situation, the FARDC recalled the attack on August 11 against the Musenda Naval Force position on Lake Edward in the Lubero territory (North Kivu).
This assault, carried out by rebels, was described as an act of provocation jeopardizing stability and security in the region.
In their statement, the FARDC reaffirmed their firm determination to defend territorial integrity and protect civilian populations, while calling on regional and international partners to take note of these violations and assume their responsibilities to ensure compliance with the agreements signed.
