SADC summit reaffirms commitment to peace in Eastern DRC, elects new leadership

Heads of State and Government of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have concluded their 45th Ordinary Summit in Antananarivo, Madagascar, reaffirming their strong commitment to peace, security, and stability in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Summit welcomed coordinated efforts by the African Union Commission, SADC, and the East African Community (EAC) to enhance synergy between the Luanda and Nairobi processes.
Leaders also emphasized the importance of aligning with other international initiatives, including the 2025 Washington Agreement and Doha Declaration 2025.
A solemn tribute was paid to fallen members of the SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC), honoring them as symbols of regional solidarity, courage, and peace.
The Summit strongly condemned disinformation campaigns targeting the mission and reaffirmed its compliance with regional and international principles in supporting a member state facing external aggression.
Outgoing Chair of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, presented a report praised for its active role in promoting regional stability.
Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera was elected as the new Chair of the Organ, while King Mswati III of Eswatini was named Incoming Chair.
The Summit also acknowledged constitutional progress in Lesotho and congratulated Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, and Mauritius on their recent peaceful elections.
Condolences were extended to the families of prominent regional figures who recently passed away, honoring their contributions to SADC’s development and influence.
