Football/ FIFA considers biennial Club World Cup

FIFA is reportedly weighing a major shift in the Club World Cup format, potentially staging the tournament every two years from 2029 instead of its current four-year cycle, according to The Guardian.
The move, discussed as early as June, follows pressure from top European clubs like Real Madrid, eager for more frequent participation.
High-profile teams missing the 2025 edition including Barcelona, Liverpool, and Manchester United have also backed the idea, drawn by the event’s lucrative payouts.
Chelsea, for instance, earned €98 million for winning the 2025 title against PSG (3-0).
While the schedule is locked until 2030, FIFA is already exploring an expanded 48-team format up from 32 to include more clubs.
The proposal aims to capitalize on growing commercial interest but risks further congesting football’s packed calendar. A final decision is expected after broader consultations with stakeholders.
