Joint EAC–SADC virtual summit: Félix Tshisekedi takes part in regional discussions

Kinshasa, August 13, 2025 – From his offices at the African Union City in Kinshasa, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, participated on Wednesday in a joint virtual summit bringing together the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The meeting gathered several African leaders. Alongside the Congolese Head of State, the presidents of Zambia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Kenya were present in person. Uganda and Burundi were represented by their vice presidents, while Angola, Madagascar, and Somalia delegated their foreign ministers.
This videoconference follows up on the summit held on August 1, 2025. Discussions focused in particular on defining the terms of reference for the group of five facilitators appointed during the previous session.
In this context, participants approved the co-option of former President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, who joins the four other co-facilitators already in office. This group will be tasked with supporting the joint efforts of the two regional organizations in addressing strategic and security issues affecting the region.
This new cycle of consultations reflects the commitment of the two regional economic communities to coordinate their actions and jointly address common challenges in peace, stability, and development.
