Death of Alain Traoré, alias “Alino Faso”: Ouagadougou demands explanations and the repatriation of the body

Ouagadougou, July 28, 2025 — The Burkinabe government reacted on Monday to the death of its national, Alain Traoré, known as “Alino Faso,” in Côte d’Ivoire, under circumstances that remain unclear.
Informed through social media, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabe Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, urgently summoned the Chargé d’Affaires of the Ivorian embassy in Ouagadougou.
During the meeting, the head of Burkinabe diplomacy first demanded official confirmation of the death, which was granted by the Ivorian representative. He then expressed his “outrage” at what he considers a serious breach of diplomatic protocol.
According to Minister Traoré, neither the Burkinabè embassy nor the consulate in Abidjan—nor even the authorities in Ouagadougou—were officially notified of the incident. “There has been a lack of consideration, courtesy, and respect—not only toward the Burkinabe authorities, but also toward the deceased’s family, who were forced to learn of the tragedy through social media”, he stated.
The frustration, he added, is even greater because the announcement of the death was made public 72 hours after the incident, through a brief statement, with no details or explanations.
The minister firmly called for full clarity on the circumstances surrounding the death. He also emphasized that Alain Traoré, who had been stripped of his Ivorian nationality, remains a Burkinabe citizen: “We want to receive the body of our compatriot here in Burkina Faso”, he insisted, urging the Ivorian authorities to fully cooperate.
