Mali bolsters Bamako’s climate resilience with major infrastructure investment

The Malian government has announced a significant 31.5 billion CFA francs (approximately $51 million) funding boost for the Bamako Urban Resilience Project (PRUB), a strategic initiative to address the capital city’s growing environmental and infrastructural challenges. Under the leadership of Transitional President General Assimi Goïta, this investment aims to transform Bamako into a more sustainable and climate-resistant urban center.

The comprehensive project focuses on four key areas: upgrading sanitation infrastructure to handle frequent flooding, implementing modern waste management systems, expanding reliable access to clean water, and reinforcing flood prevention measures.

These improvements specifically target Bamako’s most vulnerable neighborhoods, where rapid urbanization has strained existing services and increased climate vulnerability.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the initiative includes capacity-building programs for local institutions to improve urban planning and crisis response.

The funding comes at a critical time as Bamako faces mounting pressures from population growth and more extreme weather patterns.

Officials emphasize that the project will not only mitigate immediate flood risks but also create long-term solutions for sustainable urban development.
