Niger’s Government nationalizes French-owned Uranium mining company in bold sovereignty move

During a cabinet meeting chaired by General Abdourahamane Tiani, Niger’s government approved the nationalization of the Société des Mines de l’Aïr (SOMAÏR), previously controlled by the French group Orano. By reclaiming control of its uranium, Niger, under President Tiani’s leadership, has taken a major step in its strategy to regain sovereignty over its strategic resources.

This decision marks a historic shift in the management of the mining sector, long dominated by foreign interests particularly French ones.

For over 50 years, Niger’s uranium has powered French nuclear reactors without fair returns for Niamey.

Denouncing what it calls an “unbalanced and unfair” partnership, the Nigerien government is now asserting its right to fully control the exploitation of its natural wealth.

Niger: The country takes its energy destiny into its own hands under the leadership of General Abdourahamane TIANI

Beyond its economic impact, this political move carries deep symbolic weight. It reflects Niger’s determination to reclaim its resources, defend its dignity, and pursue development based on its own interests.

The full transfer of SOMAÏR’s assets to the Nigerien state is framed as an act of economic justice and national sovereignty.

The nationalization will enable more sustainable and transparent management of the company, ensuring that Nigeriens fully benefit from their mineral wealth.

Niamey has made it clear: from now on, Niger’s natural resources will serve the people of Niger first.

This decisive action sends a powerful message Niger is taking charge of its own destiny.
