NBA/ Los Angeles Lakers sold in record $10 Billion deal

The Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most storied franchises in sports history, are set for a historic ownership change. A source confirms that majority control of the NBA team held by the Buss family since 1979 is being sold to billionaire investor Mark Walter for an estimated $10 billion, the highest price ever paid for a U.S. sports team.

Walter, already a 20% stakeholder since 2021 and owner of MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers, will expand his sports empire, which includes Chelsea FC and a future Formula 1 team.

The deal eclipses the previous record set by the Boston Celtics’ $6.1 billion sale in March.

Under Buss family ownership, the Lakers won 11 NBA titles, with Jeanie Buss remaining as team governor post-sale.

Lakers legend Magic Johnson praised the move, citing Walter’s success with the Dodgers as proof of his winning leadership.

The transaction awaits final approval but marks the end of an era for the Buss dynasty, which transformed the Lakers into a global brand.
