Burkina Faso launches Eco-City project amid security challenges

Despite ongoing security concerns, Burkina Faso continues its march toward progress. On Tuesday, June 11, 2025, President Captain Ibrahim Traoré inaugurated the construction of an eco-friendly residential complex comprising around 30 triplex buildings (two-story units).

This ambitious project reaffirms the Head of State’s commitment to resilient and sustainable development, aligned with climate realities and the growing needs of urban populations.

Located near Ouagadougou, the future eco-city will be fully energy-independent, powered entirely by solar energy.

Burkina Faso, blessed with near-permanent sunshine, aims to leverage this natural resource to build low-carbon, climate-adapted infrastructure suited to the Sahelian environment.

The initiative reflects a new vision of urban planning one that merges modernity, energy autonomy, and improved quality of life.

With this project, Captain Traoré sends a clear message: no circumstance, not even the fight against terrorism, should halt social and economic progress.

Instead, he underscores that development and sovereignty are inseparable battles. “Even at war, we build,” appears to be the driving ethos behind this presidential initiative.

Technically, the housing units will adhere to modern standards, using locally sourced materials and climate-responsive architecture. Each home will feature solar panels for energy independence and an efficient water management system.

The eco-city will also include green spaces, playgrounds, and communal areas to ensure a dignified living environment for residents.

By pushing forward with sustainable urbanization, Burkina Faso demonstrates that resilience and long-term planning remain priorities, even in challenging times.
