Football/ Italy: Claudio Ranieri rejects Italy Job, leaving FIGC in search of new coach

In a surprising twist, Claudio Ranieri has turned down the opportunity to become Italy’s next manager, despite being the Italian Football Federation’s (FIGC) preferred candidate to replace Luciano Spalletti.

Spalletti was dismissed after Italy’s disappointing loss to Norway, and Claudio Ranieri fresh off a strong season as an advisor at AS Roma was expected to take over.

However, the 73-year-old opted to remain loyal to Roma’s owners, the Friedkin family, rather than accept the national team role.

The FIGC now faces renewed pressure to find a suitable replacement, with the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign looming.

Spalletti, in his farewell remarks, pledged support for his successor, saying, “I hope the next coach does better and leads Italy to the World Cup.”

Ranieri’s decision leaves Italy scrambling for alternatives, as the veteran coach’s experience and popularity had made him a logical choice.

With Roma unwilling to block the move, his refusal underscores his commitment to the club leaving the FIGC back at square one in their managerial search.
