Sahel / AES strengthens: Colonel Assimi Goïta appointed Chairman, new infrastructure projects in the pipeline

On July 6, 2024, a historic milestone was achieved with the official formation of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) during the first AES summit held in Niamey, Niger.

Colonel Assimi Goïta was appointed as the inaugural President of the Confederation for a one-year term.

This summit was marked by significant decisions aimed at enhancing integration and development among the AES member states, which include Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

Among the most notable initiatives is the construction of various road and rail infrastructures designed to connect the three AES countries.

These infrastructure projects are intended to facilitate the movement of people and goods, stimulate economic exchanges, and strengthen cooperation between the member states.

The establishment of the AES Confederation and the appointment of Colonel Assimi Goïta as its President symbolize the leaders’ commitment to building a strong and enduring alliance.

They have expressed their determination to work collaboratively to address common regional challenges and to promote peace, security, and economic development.

The planned road and rail infrastructures will have a significant impact on the economies of the three countries.

They will help open up rural areas, reduce transportation costs, and boost intraregional trade.

These infrastructures will also contribute to improving the quality of life for the populations by facilitating access to basic services such as healthcare and education.

The creation of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States marks a turning point in regional cooperation within the Sahel.

Under the leadership of Colonel Assimi Goïta, the AES is committed to undertaking ambitious projects for the benefit of its populations.
