Niger / USA: High-level meeting to discuss the withdrawal of US troops

On Wednesday, May 15, 2024, a significant meeting took place between the Minister of National Defense of Niger, General Salifou Mody, and a high-ranking American delegation as part of the process of withdrawing American troops from Niger.

This meeting, reported by the National Council for the Safeguarding of the homeland (CNSP), provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss the modalities of this withdrawal and its implications.

The American delegation, led by Christopher Maier, Deputy Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict, and General Dagvin Anderson, Director of Joint Force Development at the US Department of Defense, expressed their commitment to working closely with Nigerien authorities to ensure an orderly and secure withdrawal of troops.

This meeting holds particular importance in the context of bilateral relations between Niger and the United States, highlighting the willingness of both countries to maintain open and constructive dialogue even in sensitive situations such as the withdrawal of foreign military forces.

General Salifou Mody expressed gratitude to the American delegation for their collaborative and transparent approach throughout the withdrawal process.

 He emphasized the importance of ensuring security and stability in the region while respecting Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Discussions also focused on measures to strengthen the capabilities of Nigerien security forces so that they can fully assume responsibility for the country’s internal security after the departure of American troops.

Cooperation in training and equipment was discussed as a key element of this transition.

This meeting between Niger and the United States marks an important step in the process of withdrawing American troops from Nigerien territory.
