Mali’s National Transitional Council (CNT) has approved the draft law ratifying the Liptako-Gourma Charter establishing the Alliance of Sahel States (AES)

The National Transitional Council (CNT)  of Mali has approved the draft law ratifying the Liptako-Gourma Charter establishing the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

This charter, signed in Bamako on September 16th, 2023, aims to establish an architecture of collective defence and mutual assistance between Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali and the Republic of Niger.

The aim of the Charter of the Alliance of Sahel States is to promote cooperation on security and the prevention and management of threats such as terrorism, violent extremism and other security challenges in the region.

It also encourages the pooling of efforts to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of each member state.

The creation of this alliance comes at a time when the Sahel States have been facing major security challenges for more than a decade, including the spread of terrorism and other criminal activities.

The Alliance of Sahel States aims to strengthen regional cooperation to address these challenges and promote stability in the region.

The ratification bill was passed by 140 votes in favour, with no votes against or abstentions, marking Mali’s commitment to this regional security initiative.
