Burkina Faso/Security: Minister SANA outlines strategies to combat terrorism and, above all, prevent psychosis linked to false information

Under the leadership of Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Commissioner Divisionnaire Mahamadou SANA, significant steps are being taken to enhance the country’s counterterrorism efforts and manage public fear caused by misinformation.

On August 10, 2024, SANA announced a major counterterrorism drill involving military forces, designed to boost the readiness and effectiveness of security personnel.

The exercise, which simulates a terrorist attack, aims to strengthen the capabilities of Burkina Faso’s security forces and ensure they are well-prepared for real threats.

SANA urged residents, especially those living near the drill site, to remain calm and composed despite the expected sounds of gunfire, explosions, and traffic disruptions during the exercise.

In addition to the practical aspects of the drill, SANA emphasized the importance of addressing misinformation that could arise from such events.

He highlighted recent concerns about fake news, citing an incident from June 12, when a stray shell landed at the RTB premises, leading to widespread panic fuelled by false reports.

SANA’s proactive approach includes preemptively countering potential rumors and reassuring the public.

By providing clear information and maintaining transparency, the minister aims to build trust and alleviate anxiety among Burkinabe citizens.

This strategy reflects SANA’s commitment to not only enhancing security but also managing the psychological impact of terrorism and misinformation on the population.
