Argentina advances to Copa America final with 2-0 victory over Canada

In a decisive match at the MetLife Stadium, Argentina secured their place in the 2024 Copa America final by defeating Canada 2-0.

 

This victory marks Argentina’s third consecutive final appearance in the tournament.

 

With Lionel Messi starting, Argentina took control of the game early on. Julian Alvarez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, capitalizing on a pass from Rodrigo de Paul to give Argentina a 1-0 lead, which they held until halftime.

 

Returning from the break, Argentina extended their lead just before the hour mark.

 

Lionel Messi, who had been goalless since the start of the tournament, finally found the back of the net by deflecting a shot from Enzo Fernandez, making it 2-0.

 

This goal was Messi’s 109th for Argentina, reinforcing his legendary status as he became the second-highest scorer in national team history and marked his presence in his sixth Copa America.

 

Despite efforts from Canadian stars Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David, Canada was unable to mount a comeback.

 

The final score remained 2-0, with Argentina securing their spot in the final. They will face the winner of the Uruguay-Colombia match, set to take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

 

Lionel Messi was named Man of the Match, further cementing his legacy. In his 12 major tournaments with Argentina, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has reached the final seven times.
