Meta targets Nigerian cybercriminal network with new Sextortion prevention measures

On Wednesday, Meta disclosed that the accounts it has disrupted for sextortion were connected to a broader network of Nigerian cybercriminals known as “Yahoo Boys.”

This network is part of Meta’s list of dangerous organizations and individuals prohibited from using its platforms.

Meta utilizes several technologies to identify and address sextortion attempts.

This includes automatically blurring nude images sent to users in messages, which prompts a warning that they don’t need to respond and provides options to block and report the sender immediately.

In addition, as part of new safety tools introduced in April, Meta will not display the “message” button on profiles of teens when interacting with accounts suspected of sextortion, even if those accounts have previously established a connection.

These measures aim to enhance user protection and reduce the risk of sextortion on its platforms.
