Burkina-Faso: The government creates the CNSA to consolidate its national food security strategy

The establishment of the National Food Security Council (CNSA), a key initiative under President Ibrahim Traoré’s development policy and autonomy strategy, underscores Burkina Faso’s commitment to ensuring food security as a cornerstone of national stability

Indeed, during the cabinet meeting on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, the transitional government, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Resources, and Fisheries, issued five decrees, one of which pertains to the creation, composition, responsibilities, organization, and functioning of a body tasked with ensuring food security.

This deliberative and advisory body, which is the CNSA will oversee «the implementation of reference policy documents on food security», as stated by Mr. Ismaël Sombié following the government’s weekly meeting.

It is empowered as the sole framework for interventions in the food security domain.

The current decree establishing this body revises «decree n°2003-670/PRES/PM/MAECR/MAHRH/MFB/MEDEV of December 31, 2003, adopting the general framework of State-Partner cooperation in food security and instituting the National Food Security Council (CNSA)», according to Minister Ismaël Sombié.

«This revision aims to affirm the state’s leadership in food security and to include new actors in the National Food Security Policy, as well as new vulnerability factors such as insecurity, pandemics, and epizootics», added the Minister of Agriculture.

The adoption of this decree enables the National Food Security Council to effectively fulfill its missions.
