Astonishing Boxing day comeback: Manchester United triumphs 3-2 against Aston Villa in Ten Hag’s debut

The Boxing Day fixture at Old Trafford, the first match for Manchester United since the club’s acquisition, delivered a memorable spectacle against Aston Villa. Despite trailing 0-2, the Red Devils, under the management of Erik Ten Hag, staged a remarkable comeback to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory, highlighted by a standout brace from Alejandro Garnacho.

Aston Villa took the lead in the 22nd minute with McGinn’s expertly executed free-kick from an acute angle, finding the back of the net.

This opening goal was followed by a second within six minutes, as Lenglet found himself unmarked at the far post to convert McGinn’s corner.

The ball deflected to Dendoncker, who scored past a helpless Onana.

Manchester United showed a resurgence of pride early in the second half, with Alejandro Garnacho seemingly pulling one back in the 48th minute from a superb Marcus Rashford pass.

However, the goal was disallowed for Garnacho’s offside position. The Red Devils’ spirited comeback efforts finally paid off in the 59th minute when Fernandes delivered a precise through ball to Rashford, who crossed for Garnacho to narrow the deficit.

The celebration continued at Old Trafford as Garnacho completed his brace, capitalizing on Mainoo’s recovery to expertly finish Fernandes’ cross, despite Diego Carlos’ deflection.

Manchester United turned the tables in the match with a well-placed goal from Hojlund after a Fernandes outswinging cross.

This marked the Danish striker’s first Premier League goal.

This dramatic turnaround provided a memorable Boxing Day for Manchester United supporters. With this victory, the Red Devils climbed to the 6th position in the standings with 31 points. Meanwhile, Aston Villa missed the opportunity to close in on Liverpool.
