Foot/ Premier League: The Gunners break the curse and defeat the Citizens
In the eighth match day of the Premier League, Arsenal faced off against Manchester City in a highly anticipated clash. Manchester City, coming off their first defeat of the season to Wolverhampton in the previous round, suffered another loss, their second in the league, against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
This marked yet another winless league match for Pep Guardiola’s Sky Blues. The first half of the game was characterized by few clear-cut opportunities, with both teams unable to break the deadlock.
Arsenal had some nervy moments in defense, which could have been punished by Manchester City, and Kovacic narrowly avoided a red card. The first half ended in a goalless draw.
After halftime, Arsenal came out strong, preventing Manchester City from gaining control of the ball.
However, efforts from players like Odegaard and Zinchenko were thwarted by resolute Cityzens’ defense.
As the match entered its final quarter-hour, Man City regained momentum but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Both teams seemed to prioritize defensive strategies over offensive ones. It was in this context that Mikel Arteta’s men created the decisive moment.
A long cross-field pass from Partey found Tomiyasu in the midfield, who headed the ball to Havertz.
The German forward resisted Aké’s challenge to set up Martinelli, whose first-time shot was deflected into the net by Aké’s face!
Arsenal took the lead in the 86th minute, making it 1-0, and the score remained unchanged until the end of regular time.
With this victory, Arsenal continued their positive run against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City this season, following their earlier triumph in the Community Shield.
They broke the curse of not beating City since December 21, 2015.
In the Premier League standings, Arsenal (20 points) overtook Manchester City (3rd place with 18 points) and became the runner-up, trailing Tottenham, who leads with the same number of points.
