Burkina Faso: Around ten assailants eliminated in the Central-North region on Saturday, according to the army

On Saturday, September 2nd, around ten assailants were killed during an offensive led by regular armed forces in the vicinity of Silmiougou, in the Sanmatenga province, Central-North region of Burkina Faso.

A detachment from the patriotic coalition, composed of elements from the Mobile Intervention Unit Group (GUMI), Mobile Intervention Unit (UMI) of the National Police, and Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP), carried out an attack on a terrorist position.

According to a statement released by security sources on September 2, 2023, «The assailants had to retreat in the face of the firepower of the units, which managed to neutralize around ten terrorists».

At the end of the battles, the combat forces recovered «weapons and vehicles» from the hands of the assailants, as specified by the General Staff of the Armed Forces in the statement.

On the friendly side, one police officer and four VDP members lost their lives during the combat, according to the army’s statement.

They also mentioned that the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Colonel-Major Célestin Simporé, paid tribute to the «memory of the fighters who fell for the Homeland».

The authority praised the brave fighters «for their spirit of sacrifice and urged them to maintain the momentum of reclaiming the territory underway».
