Burkina Faso: International Women’s Day in Diplomacy: H.E. Mrs. Olivia Rouamba Pays Tribute to Women in Her Department

The participation of women in all areas of political life in Burkina Faso is a vital sign of gender equality. In line with this, the Burkinabe Government is committed to implementing feminist diplomacy. Strengthening gender parity within the Burkinabe diplomatic corps is one of the government’s priorities. On the occasion of the International Women’s Day in Diplomacy celebrated on June 24th each year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso delivered a message to her community.

« On this June 24th dedicated by the United Nations as International Women’s Day in Diplomacy, I pay tribute to all the women of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabes Abroad, both at the central level and in diplomatic missions and consular posts.

My thoughts also go to all the women working in Embassies and Consulates here in Ouagadougou, especially women Ambassadors and Consul Generals. Special mention goes to our predecessors who have made significant contributions to Burkinabe diplomacy. I wish a commemoration filled with strength to all the brave women in diplomacy! » quoted from the message of H.E. Mrs. Olivia Rouamba.

The Gender Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs initiated the first edition of the 72 Hours of Women Diplomats in Burkina Faso in March 2023. With the theme « Women and Diplomacy in Burkina Faso: Challenges and Prospects», these 72 hours of women diplomats, according to Minister Rouamba, provide an opportunity to raise visibility for the diplomacy profession.

Specifically, «they will emphasize the participation of women in the smooth running of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs», she added.

While highlighting the challenges associated with the diplomacy profession, particularly for women, H.E. Mrs. Olivia Rouamba stated that « In the current context, Burkinabe diplomacy needs more synergy between women and men in order to achieve better results and fulfill the objectives assigned to the department».
