In a solemn gesture underscoring his commitment to national security, President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé led a national tribute on Monday, January 13, to honor the fallen soldiers of Operation Koundjoaré. This counterterrorism mission, carried out in northern Togo, claimed the lives of courageous service members dedicated to safeguarding the nation.

The tribute, held at the General Gnassingbé Eyadéma camp in Lomé, gathered government officials, grieving families, and members of the armed forces, reflecting a unified stand against threats to peace.

During the ceremony, President Gnassingbé laid wreaths to honor the memory of the soldiers and posthumously awarded them the title of Knights of the Order of Mono.

In recognition of their ultimate sacrifice, families received medals and national flags, symbolizing the country’s deep gratitude.

Additionally, soldiers wounded in the operation, as well as those distinguished for their bravery, were decorated, reaffirming the nation’s support for its defenders.

Colonel Kilimou Mazama-Esso, Chief of Army Staff, delivered a powerful address, emphasizing that the sacrifices made by the fallen would strengthen Togo’s resolve in its fight against terrorism.

The ceremony concluded with a military parade in tribute to the victims, serving as a poignant reminder of the collective commitment to a secure and peaceful future for all Togolese citizens.
