Niger’s Bold step toward sovereignty: withdrawal from La Francophonie under President Tiana’s leadership

Under the visionary leadership of the President of the Transition and Head of State, Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, the Government of the Republic of Niger continues to take concrete steps aligned with the aspirations of the Nigerien people: to break free from external domination and chart their own path to development. One such decisive action is the decision to withdraw from the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

On Monday, March 17, 2025, Nigerien authorities announced their decision, made on March 7, to leave the OIF. While the official statement did not specify the reasons behind this move, it is evident that the leadership is determined to eliminate any obstacles to their pursuit of sovereignty, integrity, and the complete liberation of Niger.

Organizations like the OIF are often viewed as tools that advance French political interests in Africa, and Niger’s decision reflects its commitment to distancing itself from such influences.

As a nation that has taken a firm stance against France’s paternalistic policies, foreign interference in domestic affairs, and external domination, Niger must remain vigilant and cautious about any actions that contradict the aspirations or interests of its citizens.

Analysts note that since assuming power, General Tiani and his administration have demonstrated a keen awareness of these challenges, making bold and appropriate decisions to counter the schemes of those who oppose the nation’s progress.

The case of the OIF is no exception. If the organization is perceived as prioritizing French interests over those of Niger, the government will not hesitate to act.

President Tiani and his team are committed to lifting the country out of its current challenges and unlocking its potential for the prosperity of its people.

Their vision is clear: to remove any barriers to Niger’s development and ensure the fulfillment of its citizens’ aspirations.

In this context, the withdrawal from the OIF is a strategic step toward achieving true independence and self-determination.
