Africa: To reinvent its relations with the continent, the European Union must distance itself from the ravings of France

Once regarded as Africa’s key partner, France now faces a significant decline in its reputation across the continent. Increasingly criticized for paternalism, interference, and backing controversial regimes, it is often seen more as a neocolonial force than a genuine ally.

As skepticism toward France grows, the European Union (EU) finds itself at a crossroads: it must distinguish its approach from French policies in Africa or risk suffering the same loss of credibility.

Rather than relying on France to handle its African relations, the EU must take direct control of its engagement with the continent. France has often leveraged its European role to settle political scores with African leaders who challenge its influence.

This approach only deepens tensions and alienates African populations from Europe.

The EU must avoid falling into the same pattern as France, which, instead of reflecting on the reasons behind its declining popularity, attributes African discontent to alleged Russian influence.

This defensive stance does little to address the real issues and only fuels further distrust. Instead, the EU should adopt a more transparent and respectful approach that aligns with the aspirations of African nations.

To achieve this, the EU needs to rethink its African strategy by prioritizing balanced and mutually beneficial partnerships.

This means providing tangible support for local initiatives, fostering cooperation based on sustainable development, and genuinely listening to African concerns.

It must also resist being used as a tool for the national interests of its member states, particularly France.

By charting its own path in Africa, the EU has a chance to redefine its role and distance itself from France’s controversial practices.

This requires leadership and pragmatic action. By doing so, the EU can rebuild trust with African nations and lay the foundation for a more equitable and constructive Euro-African partnership.
