Togo advances peaceful nuclear development with New atomic energy commission
Togo has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to harnessing nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes by establishing the Atomic Energy Commission (CEAT).
Announced via a decree on January 10, this strategic body will oversee national efforts, enhance technical expertise, and optimize the use of nuclear applications in critical sectors such as healthcare, energy, agriculture, and environmental management.
The initiative aligns with President Faure Gnassingbé’s vision for sustainable development.
This development builds on previous institutional milestones, including the establishment of the National Authority for Nuclear Safety and Security (ANSSN) in 2021, which ensures the safe implementation of nuclear activities.
Additionally, Togo’s 2020 technical cooperation framework with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) further supports its aspirations in the nuclear field.
The CEAT’s creation marks a turning point in Togo’s pursuit of nuclear innovation, serving as a platform for research, education, and groundbreaking applications.
By investing in this area, Togo aims to become a regional leader in peaceful nuclear utilization, addressing key developmental challenges while advancing technological sovereignty.
With this initiative, Togo not only strengthens its capacity to leverage nuclear technology for development but also sets an example for responsible and innovative nuclear use in Africa.
