Burkina Faso strengthens fight against corruption and public fund Mismanagement

In a decisive move to tackle corruption and restore public trust, Burkina Faso has intensified its judicial efforts. Blaise Bazié, the prosecutor at the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Ouagadougou, provided an optimistic update on January 10, 2025, highlighting significant progress made in recent months.

As part of these efforts, a special operation named « Empty Files » aims to address nearly 2,000 pending cases through exceptional court sessions from January 20 to 30, 2025.

Over the past months, dozens of individuals implicated in corruption, embezzlement, and forgery have faced justice.

Sentences have ranged from lengthy prison terms to hefty fines amounting to billions of CFA francs, signaling a zero-tolerance approach toward financial crimes.

One high-profile case involved Amidou Tiegna, whose trial was broadcast live, capturing public attention and raising awareness about the fight against corruption.

The investigation is expanding, with Yé Camille and others set to face trial in a second phase.

Meanwhile, allegations of fraud surrounding the renovation of the 4 August Stadium have prompted investigations into companies such as SIFA SA, AL MOUNIA, and TRUVA INSAAT.

Additionally, former National Assembly President Alassane Bala Sakandé is accused of embezzlement, money laundering, and unlawful distribution of public funds.

Though currently abroad, authorities have seized several of his assets across the country.

The « Empty Files » initiative aims to resolve the backlog in the judicial system, ensuring swifter case processing and preventing further delays.

This approach marks a critical step in addressing long-standing inefficiencies in the justice sector.

Burkina Faso’s judiciary is also tackling severe crimes, such as the recent arrest of a nurse accused of raping a woman at Yalgado Ouédraogo University Hospital.

This case underscores the authorities’ commitment to justice across all domains.

With concrete actions and tangible outcomes, Burkina Faso is demonstrating its resolve to combat corruption, uphold accountability, and strengthen the rule of law. These efforts represent a crucial stride toward rebuilding public confidence and fostering a fairer society.
