Nigeria/ tragedy strikes Ibadan Christmas funfair: At least 35 children dead in crowd crush
A Christmas funfair in Ibadan, Nigeria, turned tragic on Wednesday as a crowd crush claimed the lives of at least 35 children and left six others severely injured. The incident occurred at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, where over 5,000 children had gathered for the event.
The funfair, organized to distribute scholarships and other prizes, descended into chaos when the main organizer, Naomi Silekunola, arrived, prompting a rush among children eager to gain entry for cash prizes and food.
Videos from the scene revealed harrowing moments as distraught parents carried the lifeless bodies of their children.
Local police have arrested eight people, including Silekunola and the school’s principal, as investigations into possible homicide begin.
“Justice will be served accordingly,” stated Adewale Osifeso, the spokesperson for Oyo state police. Authorities have ramped up security in the area, urging residents to remain calm amid concerns over potential unrest.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu expressed condolences to the bereaved families and promised a full investigation into the tragedy.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde echoed this sentiment, vowing to uncover the causes behind the fatal incident.
“Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy,” Makinde stated. “We sympathize with the parents whose joy has been turned into mourning.”
The devastating event has left the community reeling, as questions mount over the organization and safety measures at large public gatherings.
