Angola dominates Group Stage at 26th Women’s Handball Africa Cup of Nations
The 26th edition of the Women’s Handball Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) saw Angola reaffirm its dominance, finishing the group stage unbeaten. In their final match on Tuesday in Kinshasa, the Angolans delivered a commanding performance, thrashing hosts the Democratic Republic of Congo 40-15.
As the only team to win all five group matches, Angola tops Group B, securing their spot in the quarterfinals.
This year’s group stage was one of the most prolific in the tournament’s history, with a total of 1,534 goals scored across 30 matches.
Angola led the charge, both offensively and defensively, scoring 188 goals and conceding just 85 in five games.
The team’s attacking strength was matched by their solid defense, further solidifying their status as the competition’s frontrunner.
While Angola’s superiority was clear, other teams showed strong performances. Senegal, Congo, Egypt, and Cameroon each claimed four victories. Senegal, in particular, stood out with their defensive efforts, conceding only 88 goals.
The competition also saw individual brilliance, with Cameroon’s Ateba Engadi leading the scoring charts with 35 goals, and Angola’s Marta Alberto recognized as the best goalkeeper with a remarkable 45.4% save rate.
As the tournament progresses into the knockout stages, Angola remains the team to beat, with their seamless balance of attack and defense setting them apart from the competition.
