Real Madrid stumbles again: Liverpool shines in Champions League Clash

In a high-stakes Champions League encounter, Liverpool triumphed over Real Madrid with a commanding 2-0 victory on the fifth matchday of the 2024-2025 season. Under the roaring lights of Anfield, the Reds showcased dominance, leaving the reigning Spanish giants struggling for answers.

Real Madrid, now with three defeats in five games—a historical low for the club—appeared devoid of its usual spark.

Positioned on the left flank, Kylian Mbappé had the opportunity to equalize through a penalty but was denied by Liverpool’s goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher in the 61st minute. This missed chance epitomized the night’s frustrations for the Spanish team.

Liverpool opened the scoring early in the second half through a crisp shot from Alexis Mac Allister (52’). Despite missing further chances, the Reds doubled their lead when Cody Gakpo headed home in the 76th minute, sealing Real Madrid’s fate.

The defeat underscored Real Madrid’s struggles, with a lackluster attack failing to register a single shot on target in the first half.

Liverpool, on the other hand, maintained an unbeaten run in the group stage, securing five wins in five matches to edge closer to the knockout rounds.

This victory also marked a symbolic turning point for Liverpool, ending a 15-year drought against Real Madrid at Anfield. Their last triumph in 2009 was led by Steven Gerrard.

This time, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté delivered a flawless defensive performance, neutralizing Madrid’s usually prolific attack.
