Christie’s auction showcases rare lunar meteorite and iconic artifacts
A rare lunar meteorite slice, weighing approximately 2,005.9 grams and measuring 8 millimeters thick, is set to be auctioned by Christie’s. Discovered in 2019 in Mali’s Tisselit Valley, the meteorite was subsequently divided into seven polished slices, with this piece recognized as the second-largest of its kind worldwide.
Scientific analysis has identified the fragment as a breccia, a unique composition of rock, glass shards, and glass spherules originating from the moon’s near-surface soil.
Alongside this lunar relic, Christie’s is also presenting an array of iconic items, including a scientific manuscript by Albert Einstein detailing first-order field equation approximations and a musical manuscript by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for the fourth movement of his Serenade in D Major.
Works by celebrated artists like Zao Wou-Ki, Yayoi Kusama, and Chen Yifei add a modern artistic dimension to the sale.
Industry reports reveal that Chinese collectors have become the largest buyer group in the global auction market, reflecting China’s growing influence in art and rare collectibles.
Christie’s data from this year’s first half further highlights that China leads globally in the number of new auction buyers, underscoring a powerful shift in collector demographics.
